GOOD NEWS! Some justice is achieved, with this first revenge porn conviction in California under their new law! 🙂

[LA TIMES] — Three years ago, Noe Iniguez and his girlfriend broke up. That’s when he decided to get even, prosecutors said.

He posted a topless photograph of his ex-girlfriend on her employer’s Facebook page along with messages calling her a “drunk” and a “slut” and encouraging her firing, they said.

Until recently, his actions would have been outside the reach of the law, because victims were not offered protection from people who intentionally posted their nude photographs without their consent.

That changed when a new law took effect in October 2013, making Iniguez’s actions a misdemeanor crime.

This week, he became the first person in California to be convicted for “revenge porn” and was sentenced to a year in jail.

~~ Yay! We hope this will deter other offenders from thinking they can get away with posting their own revenge porn.

Check out this great letter from Fight the New Drug responding to Jennifer Lawrence’s new Vanity Fair interview! ~~~

“…When we just read your first interview since your hacked photos were released, you said something we found super concerning:

“I was in a loving, healthy, great relationship for four years. It was long distance, and either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he’s going to look at you.”

Now, after reading that, we couldn’t help but feel like your perceptions of a “healthy” relationship were a little bit off. However, we also know that there are thousands upon thousands of women out there who feel the exact same way. We are sorry for that.

We’re sorry that society has been “pornified” and that we are living in a culture that thinks that hacked and stolen photos of naked people are something to seek out, cheer for, laugh about, and spread around. With a society that thinks a woman is only as good as her body, it’s easy to see why you would feel like your boyfriend would turn to porn even when dating a talented and beautiful woman like yourself.”

Also, here’s another great article on this topic, from our friend Gabe Deem, (ex porn addict), of The Reboot Nation:

“My message to these guys: Pull your pants up from your ankles, and quit jackin’ off to porn. Then maybe girls won’t feel the need to take nude pics in the first place. The pleasure porn offers cannot compare to the pleasure and love that a real flesh n’ blood woman can give you. I can promise you no amount of pixels can ever love you back.”

Right on, Gabe! Keep up the great work in speaking out!

Here’s a powerful article that addresses the connections between pornography and celebrity photo leaks. ~~

WARNING! Graphic and disturbing content ahead!

[Mashable] — “…Gail Dines, chair and professor of American Studies at Wheelock College in Boston, told Mashable the hack represents something more insidious than just standard economics.

“To be unclothed in the face of people who are clothed is to be rendered powerless,” she said. “This is really about humiliating women, degrading them and reducing them to…f*ck objects.”

Dines, author of the book PORNLAND: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality, said the release of the private images is behavior typical of a “porn culture” in which women are disposable objects used temporarily, and often brutally, for physical pleasure. In this worldview, women’s bodies are cheap and undeserving of privacy or integrity.

This sounds like sick hyperbole until Dines starts to list the trends she observes as a pornography researcher. In certain threads, male users ask for suggestions on how to find particularly demeaning scenes, like a woman registering physical pain performing certain sexual acts, such as anal sex. Numerous commenters will direct him to a specific film and recommend a scene — down to the second.

In a kind of porn known as “facial abuse,” women are often brought to the brink of asphyxiation. In one recent example, Dines recalled, she watched as a famous porn actress was choked and strangled to the point where her eyes began to roll back into her head. The scene ended with the star in tears, her running mascara mixed with the semen that had been ejaculated into her eyes.”

———-

~~ Thank you, Gail, for having the courage to share the UGLY TRUTH. As horrific as the reality of porn is, it will never get better unless we inform people about it, so that something can be done to stop this devastatingly cruel nightmare that harms so many people, especially women and girls.

Here’s some good info on revenge porn, which is something that can severely harm someone’s reputation, career and life in many ways!

“No matter if you’re a celebrity or a regular person, these pictures and videos go viral,” Jacobs told Fox411. “These cyber postings can lead to real life physical attacks, your professional status being compromised as well as your relationship with friends and family suffering. It essentially ruined my life.”

Carrie Goldberg, a New York attorney who litigates online sexual privacy invasions, explained the motivation for those who spread revenge porn.

“Sociopathy is the motive for those who are straight up porn offenders. They cannot deal with rejection,” Goldberg said. “For hackers, it’s a different motivation. It’s not about harming the individual – the hackers are in competition with each other. They’re online hooligans.”

VIDEO interview from the article, with revenge porn expert Dr. Charlotte Laws:

VIDEO: Revenge porn expert Dr. Charlotte Laws shares how her daughter was a victim of revenge porn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ImO_2alKko

NOTE: She shares a lot of useful info, but we strongly disagree with her when she says that revenge porn has nothing to do with “regular porn” made by the porn industry. The misogynist culture that she describes that fuels revenge porn is in large part CREATED and PERPETUATED by the porn industry. See our previous post on this issue:

http://mashable.com/2014/09/03/celebrity-nude-photo-leak-women/

Here’s the info on the NBC producer mentioned in the above article, who posted a nonconsensual sex tape online at a porn site.

http://nypost.com/2014/09/09/nbc-producer-busted-for-making-sex-tape-with-unknowing-girlfriend/

~ NOTE: We strongly believe that people should have the right to take nude photos of themselves if they want, and to keep them private, or share them selectively with whomever they wish. But we disagree with the article just above and DO think it’s best to discourage people from sexting — if they don’t want those images to end up online and be seen by millions of strangers and everyone they know. There’s just too high a risk of that happening and destroying their life, and of the perpetrator not being adequately punished, as tragic and totally wrong as that is.

So what do YOU think is best? Discourage sexting, or not?

WOW. A woman is suing Facebook for 123 MILLION dollars because they were VERY slow to remove some revenge porn images posted by a former “friend.”

The legal document states that Ali is seeking “full justice for the significant trauma, extreme humiliation, extreme embarrassment, severe emotional disturbances, and severe mental and physical suffering … due to the unconscionable activities and gross failures of Defendant Adeel and Defendant Facebook.”

Additionally, Ali’s lawsuit claims “seeks to expose the frailties and failures of the falsely advertised, and false promoted privacy mechanisms” of Facebook, and the significant damages that can result from those failings, that she further alleges “Facebook’s upper management, officers, directors and key employees have long known about and essentially concealed.”

Check out the full story below for more details. It’s very interesting. And very relevant to anyone who uses Facebook!

http://www.thewrap.com/facebook-slapped-with-123-million-lawsuit-over-revenge-porn-page/

So what does everyone think? Do you think the woman suing should be awarded the full amount? If not, how much should she get? And if Facebook loses this lawsuit, do you think they will change their ways and take quicker action in revenge porn cases in the future?? Please share your thoughts. Thanks! 🙂

Here is an Interesting article about one good man named Adam Steinbaugh (@AdamSteinbaugh) who’s doing everything he can to hold revenge porn profiteers accountable. Hopefully he will inspire others to step up and just SAY NO to ALL types of porn!

“I was really pissed off at what was being done to these men and women and wanted to do something about it,” says Steinbaugh, 31. Once exposed, the men are subject to public shaming. Sometimes people will take sites down when they get wind Steinbaugh is going to expose them. Others lash out at him. “I get death threats and threatened with lawsuits,” he says. He hasn’t been sued yet but those he has exposed have.”
