Ex Porn Performer on Condoms: “We are Human Beings that Deserve Respect” (Via AIDS Healthcare Foundation)

20131006-155650.jpg

A former porn performer has shared an anonymous letter that exposes how callously the industry abuses the health and safety of their performers. Check out the disturbing details below, which explains why this one female performer left porn, and why she now advocates for mandatory condom use!

[AIDS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION] — LOS ANGELES (October 3, 2013) On the heels of widespread news reports of several recent HIV infections found in several adult film performers working in the porn industry, a former adult performer wrote an eloquent ‘To Whom It May Concern’ letter via AHF in which the performer eloquently urges her former adult film colleagues and producers to comply with all condom use and worker safety laws and regulations. The letter, dated September 19, 2013, was sent to the community via AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s (AHF) Headquarters in Hollywood. Below is the text:

Via AHF

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I have been following the HIV crisis in the porn industry for some time now, mainly due to the fact I was a performer in the adult industry from 2011 to 2012. While I was never directly spoken down to or disrespected, there were many aspects of the adult industry that I experienced to be corrupt in my short time as a performer that caused me to stop filming any scenes in the industry.

Please do not release my name, address or any other personal information as I have a few dear friends who work in the industry and I do not want them to know I am writing this letter. I also have a family that means a lot more to me than being known for speaking on this matter. I would love to come out publicly to aid in your efforts promoting condoms in the industry, but it would not be in my family’s or my best interest to do so. I hope you understand. I want to do my best to help.

I performed in 5 scenes, both prior and after the passing of Measure B.

I performed in scenes where the director admitted they did not pull proper permits to film. This came up because I was to sign new paperwork regarding measure B and my “rights.” I can say right now there are many shoots going on where permits in LA County are not being filed for. I remember a report a few months ago that stated the number of permits in LA County for adult filming dropped drastically. They are still shooting. That is why this is so important to me. The industry thinks it can self regulate but it cannot. They think they are invisible, when they are really being ignorant and reckless with the health and well being of those who are part of the team who put food on their table and money in their wallets. The talent. Half of the people on set are drunk, under the influence of drugs, or are there with ulterior motives. For instance, to receive oral sex on set. Actually, this is one of the deciding factors on whether you get booked again.

The fact the moratorium is going to be lifted makes me sick and uneasy. I’m sure you are familiar with how many times talent can shoot and because of that, the amount of performers who have been exposed is almost unfathomable.

Singer Sinead O’Connor encourages Miley Cyrus to NOT allow the music business to prostitute her

20131005-163235.jpg

Well done to Sinead O’Connor, who wrote a very wise, powerful and amazing letter to Miley Cyrus! 🙂 Sinead’s “Open Letter to Miley”, encouraging her to not prostitute herself (or over-sexualize or pornify herself), is posted on Sinead’s Facebook Page and website, and a couple of excerpts are included below. Please like and share this excellent and heartfelt letter, that so many young women need to read and learn from! Thanks! 🙂

EXCERPT:

“I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.” […]

“Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted.. its so not cool Miley.. its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. we aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers.. that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career.”

“Girls Like Us: CHOICE – Young Women in the Sex Industry” | Fair Observer°

20131004-164839.jpg

PLEASE READ this powerful article by GEMS GIRLS founder Rachel Lloyd on the lack of CHOICE in the sextrade. (@GEMSGIRLS)

[Fair Observer] — *[Note: The following is an excerpt from Girls Like Us: Fighting for a World Where Girls Are Not for Sale, a memoir about Rachel Lloyd’s experiences as a survivor of commercial sexual exploitation and her work over the last 15 years running Girls Educational And Mentoring Services (GEMS).]

The question of choice impacts the way that domestically trafficked girls are viewed and treated by our society. Many people believe that girls “choose” this life, and while it is true that most girls are not kidnapped into the sex industry, to frame their actions as choice is at best misleading. It is clear from the experiences of girls, that while they may have acted in response to individual, environmental and societal factors, this may not necessarily be defined as a choice.

Webster’s Dictionary describes the act of choosing as “to select from a number of possible alternatives; decide on and pick out.” Therefore, in order for a choice to be a legitimate construct, you’ve got to believe that: a) you actually have possible alternatives; and b) you’ve also got to have the capacity to weigh these alternatives against one another and decide on the best avenue. Commercially sexually exploited and trafficked girls have neither – their choices are limited by their age, their family, their circumstances and their inability to weigh up one bad situation against another, given their developmental and emotional immaturity. Therefore, the issue of choice has to be framed in three ways: age and age-appropriate responsibility, the type of choice and the context of the choice.

Age Factor

The age factor is perhaps the most obvious reason that discussions around true “choice” are erroneous and unhelpful to the debate. There’s a reason that we have age limits and standards governing the “choices” that children and youth can make, from drinking, to marrying, to driving, to leaving school, and that is because we, as a society, recognize that there’s a difference in child/adolescent and adult development.

There’s also a fairly obvious reason that the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its reauthorizations in 2003, 2005, and 2008 have all supported a definition of child sex trafficking where children under the age of 18 found in the commercial sex trade are considered to be victims of trafficking without requiring that they experienced “force, fraud, or coercion” to keep them there. For victims of sex trafficking aged 18 and over, the law requires the “force, fraud, or coercion” standard. In defining the crime of sex trafficking, Congress created certain protections for children. It’s taken as a given that children and youth are operating from a different context, especially in light of age of consent laws.

Not only are choices shaped by external limitations decided by age, they’re also dictated by the psychological and emotional limitations that is adolescent development. In hindsight, as adults looking back on our teenage selves, we can recognize our own impulsivity, risk-taking, our need for peer approval, rebellion against our parents, our limited understanding of consequences – in short, all the characteristics that define being a teenager. Very few adults would honestly want to revisit the naïveté, vulnerability, and often flat out ignorance of adolescence. Many parents don’t trust their own 16-year-old to drive their car, pick their own “good enough” friends, or stay home alone for the weekend without hosting a party. Yet, interestingly, I’ve met lots and lots of adults who feel that a 16-year-old is completely mature enough to be considered fully capable and competent of making the choice to be in the sex industry.

Given their age and psychological development, children and youth often make decisions that are not in their best interests, or that perhaps are unsafe. It’s an unwise choice to meet a stranger in person whom you’ve only met on MySpace, not brilliant decision-making to get in someone’s car when you barely know them, nor is it a great idea to run away from home with $6 in your pocket and nowhere to go. Yet none of these “choices” are the same thing as “choosing” to be in the commercial sex industry – even if they end up leading down that path. It can also be an unwise decision to go home with someone you’ve just met, particularly if you’ve been drinking, and yet making that decision in no way means that you “chose” to get raped.

“Governor Jerry Brown Signs Bill Outlawing Revenge Pornography in California”!

20131003-125941.jpg

GOOD NEWS for a change! “Revenge porn” has just been outlawed in California! Yay anti-porn team! 🙂

[Daily Journal] — SACRAMENTO, California — California Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed a bill outlawing so-called revenge pornography and levying possible jail time for people who post naked photos of their exes after bitter breakups.

Senate Bill 255, which takes effect immediately, makes it a misdemeanor to post identifiable nude pictures of someone else online without permission with the intent to cause emotional distress or humiliation. The penalty is up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

“Until now, there was no tool for law enforcement to protect victims,” the bill’s author, Sen. Anthony Cannella, said in a statement. “Too many have had their lives upended because of an action of another that they trusted.”

Cannella, a Republican from Ceres, has said revenge pornography is a growing problem in the age of social media, when photos and videos that were made privately during a relationship can find their way onto hundreds of websites.

Before the criminal law was enacted, California allowed victims to sue their virtual assailants, but that is an expensive and time-consuming option.

Inside the brutal and hopeless world of Mumbai’s trafficked teenage sex slaves – (via The Guardian)

20131001-165617.jpg

PLEASE READ this very moving report of child sex slavery in India. AND REMEMBER: Pornography fuels these horrific atrocities. So if someone is against brutal and life shattering child sex trafficking, they must also take a stand against pornography!

[The Guardian] — It was pitch black as I stumbled through the labyrinth of the dark corridors of a large brothel house in Kamathipura, Mumbai’s notorious red-light district. I’d been told to hide my camera under my scarf, not to speak and not to make eye contact with anyone. With my hand I felt the filthy walls dripping with condensation from the intense heat.

Eventually, guided by my Indian fixer, I came to a dimly lit door at the end of a corridor. Like a prison guard, an ageing madam came to the front of the brothel and unlocked the large padlock with her set of keys. I was taken into the reception area of the brothel, the space where the customers are taken to select a girl. In the ceiling I could see a small, open trap door. When the madam had disappeared, I climbed up a wooden ladder and pushed through the small gap.

Suddenly I was face to face with a “box cage”. I knew what I was looking at. The prostitutes had told me of the caged rooms and boxes they had been held in for months, even years, when they were first taken and trafficked to the red-light district. The madams would keep the girls like slaves in the cages until they were “broken”, to the extent that they would not try to run away. The girls told me they never knew if it was night or day. They were only taken out to eat or to be given to a customer for sex. For years I had wanted to photograph these cages, to prove that these places actually exist.

I was returning to Kamathipura 11 years after my first visit – ostensibly as an aid worker. In reality I was using the access I got to make a photographic and video record of a world that shouldn’t be allowed to exist. I did a lot of hiding in the back of brothels, trying to chronicle the lives of girls trafficked and tricked into sex slavery. Before 2002, when I first came to India to photograph children born into this vile industry, I knew nothing about trafficking. Those early days of visiting Kamathipura changed my life, and I’ve been unable to let this story go.

I was unable to let go because of girls such as Guddi. I first met Guddi while I was shooting on 14th Lane, in the heart of Kamathipura. I was sheltering from the intense summer heat in the charities clinic when Guddi came rushing through the door. She was distraught and crying after being beaten by one of the gangsters who run the district.

Your No is Her Hope – UnBound – ANTI-PORN & ANTI-SEX TRAFFICKING CAMPAIGN & PETITION!

20130930-135122.jpg

PLEASE SUPPORT! 1) A campaign that shows how pornography fuels sex trafficking, and 2) a PETITION to the U.S. government to keep children porn-free! These are VERY IMPORTANT! Please check out the details and video below, and SIGN THE PETITION! Thanks! 🙂

FROM UNBOUNDNOW.ORG:

Can a single word help bring sex trafficking to its knees? We believe it can.

Many women and children who are sexually exploited are being used for the production of pornography and suffer extreme abuse. In fact, pornography is the primary gateway for the purchase of millions of innocent humans used for commercial sex.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Whether you’ve looked at pornography or not – your no is her hope.

When you say no to pornography, you say no to sex trafficking and save the lives of innocent people. When you influence those around you to say no to pornography, you shape the culture and defend those who cannot defend themselves.

Inspired by recent actions in the U.K., UnBound is urging the U.S. government to tighten restrictions on internet pornography. Our lawyers have drafted a petition asking the federal government to put laws into place requiring internet providers to automatically block pornographic websites. If someone wants to view sites with adult content, they call their internet service provider and request the block be removed. This new law would drastically reduce the ease in which pornography is readily available.

The fact that these victims are filmed or photographed does not change the fact that it is a violent crime. Because a third party is recruiting someone for the purpose of sexual exploitation and making a profit, many adult pornography materials and all child pornography materials fit the legal definition of human trafficking.

It also feeds the demand for human trafficking. When the desire for porn increases, the demand for more or different or harder kinds or pornography increases. To produce such hard porn, trafficked men, women and children are used in its production. Men who end up in brothels often began their sexual addictions with porn.

CHECK OUT THE REST OF THIS CAMPAIGN AT THE LINK BELOW, AND PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION! THANKS! 🙂

EX “LAD’S MAG” EDITOR: Experiment that convinced me online porn is the most pernicious threat

20130929-134614.jpg

PLEASE READ this POWERFUL article by a former lads’ mag editor who’s now speaking out about the harms of porn! ~~~~~ New father Martin Daubney shares the harsh truth that he has now finally confronted, after years of denying that porn was harmful. (While he was profiting from the softcore pornographic content in his “men’s magazine.”)

Daubney is featured in the first of a series of weekly UK documentaries about the harms of porn, that is starting on Monday night at 10 pm on Channel 4 in the UK. (It will be posted on their Channel 4 On Demand website for 30 days, after it first airs.) So please watch “Porn on the Brain” it if you’re in the UK, and let us know what you think! Thanks! 🙂

[DAILY MAIL] — The moment I knew internet pornography had cast its dark shadow over the lives of millions of ordinary British teenagers will live with me for ever.

I was sitting in the smart drama hall of a specialist sports college in the North of England with a fantastic reputation.

Before me were a group of 20 boys and girls, aged 13-14. Largely white, working class children, they were well turned-out, polite, giggly and shy.

As the presenter of a Channel 4 documentary called Porn On The Brain, airing next Monday at 10pm, I’d been invited to sit in on a forward-thinking class led by sex education consultant Jonny Hunt, who is regularly asked into schools to discuss sex and relationships. To establish what these kids knew about sex – including pornography – he had asked the children to write an A-Z list of the sexual terms they knew, no matter how extreme.

Most of these children had just hit puberty and some were clearly still children: wide-eyed, nervous, with high-pitched voices.

Some of the girls were beginning their first forays into make-up. Several wore braces on their teeth.

Everybody was smartly turned out in school uniform, and the most anti-authority statement in the room was a tie worn deliberately short. A One Direction pencil case lay on a desk. These were clearly good children, from good homes. So far, so very, very ordinary.
But when Jonny pinned their lists on the board, it turned out that the children’s extensive knowledge of porn terms was not only startling, it superseded that of every adult in the room – including the sex education consultant himself.

Martin was shocked by what the teenagers said
‘Nugget, what’s that?’ asked Jonny.

‘A nugget is a girl who has no arms or legs and has sex in a porno movie,’ chortled one young, pimply boy, to an outburst of embarrassed laughter from some, and outright revulsion from others.

The adults in attendance were incredulous at the thought that not only did this kind of porn exist, but that a 14-year-old boy may have actually watched it.

But the more mundane answers were just as shocking. For example, the first word every single boy and girl in the group put on their list was ‘anal’.

When questioned, they had all – every child in a class of 20 – seen sodomy acted out in porn videos. I was stunned they even knew about it – I certainly hadn’t heard of it at that age – let alone had watched it and as a result may even have wanted to try it.

One 15-year-old girl said, ‘Boys expect porn sex in real life’. And one boy – to choruses of approval – spoke of his revulsion for pubic hair, which he called a ‘gorilla’.

When Jonny pointed out that pubic hair was normal in real life, the boys scoffed, but some of the girls were angry that the boys’ template of what to expect from real girls had clearly already been set by porn.

By the end of the hour-long class – and three others that followed with other children – I was profoundly saddened by what I had witnessed. While teenage boys will always be fascinated by, and curious about, sex, what’s now considered ‘normal’ by under-18s is an entirely distorted view of intercourse and the way relationships should be conducted.

It seemed as if the children’s entire expectation of sex had been defined by what they see in online porn. The conversation was horrifying enough, yet there was worse to come.

In the playground, I interviewed a brave group of seven bright boys and girls aged 14-15 to ascertain in more detail what online porn they had witnessed.

‘Nugget, what’s that?’ asked Jonny. ‘A nugget is a girl who has no arms or legs and has sex in a porno movie,’ chortled one young, pimply boy.

One boy calmly recalled watching a scene too graphic to describe in a family newspaper, but which had involved an animal.

‘You’re watching bestiality?’ I asked. ‘That’s illegal. Where are you getting this stuff from?’

‘Facebook,’ the boy said. ‘It just pops up whether you want it or not, sometimes via advertisements. You don’t have any control over it.’

A girl added, ‘On Facebook, you just scroll down and it’s there. If any of your friends like it, it comes up on your home page.’

THE HIV CRISIS IN THE PORN INDUSTRY – by PORNLAND author Gail Dines, co-founder of Stop Porn Culture

20130928-134502.jpg

NEW! Informative Gail Dines article on the recent porn industry HIV outbreak and the issue of mandatory condoms! Check it out! Gail shares with us some interesting politics of the porn industry players and how they are turning on one of their own ( a woman who is a self-described “feminist” pornographer) who has come out in favor of condom use being mandatory to protect performers.

[Counterpunch] — The porn industry, using its sophisticated, well-resourced public relations machine, sells itself as an avant garde, progressive, counter-cultural force out to empower us all with exciting images of an edgy, fun, creative sexuality. In reality, it is a multi-billion-dollar-a-year business that functions like all global industries, especially when it feels under siege. The recent HIV outbreak among porn actors and the subsequent negative publicity about how the business treats its performers has revealed how this industry goes into attack-dog mode by discrediting, defaming, and slandering those who blow the whistle on what goes on behind the scenes.

For years, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation has been fighting for mandatory condom use on porn sets. The porn industry has mounted a wholesale attack on the foundation, accusing it of fear-mongering, exaggeration, and stigmatizing porn performers. Ironically, one of the AHF’s main critics, porn producer Tristan Taormino—who accused the organization of propagating “negative stereotypes about sex workers” and using “inaccurate information to scare the public” —is now herself a target of a porn industry smear campaign for announcing on CNN that she will no longer shoot condom-free scenes.

What a difference a year makes! In a Huffington Post article in October 2013, Tristan Taormino urged people to vote against Measure B, which made condoms mandatory, because it “will not make workers safer nor will it help stop the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).”

Accusing the AHF of trying to destroy the porn industry, Taormino argued that she was against Measure B because she wanted to “empower performers to make decisions about how they will protect themselves.” On September 20, 2013, just 11 months later, Taormino stated on her blog that she still wants to “empower performers to make decisions about all aspects of the work they do.” This time, though, empowering them means refusing to work with those who won’t use condoms. While all of this may seem very confusing to the average person not acquainted with the inner workings of the porn industry, it actually makes perfect sense given the events of the last month or so.

Last month porn performer Cameron Bay tested positive for HIV, and since then three other performers have come forward, making a total of four who have been diagnosed with acute HIV infection. At first the porn industry expressed sympathy, but now they are circling the wagons and sharpening their knives, going after the infected performers who took part in an AHF press conference on September 19. At that conference, Cameron Bay described how, in her last shoot before testing positive for HIV, her partner’s penis was bleeding, and even though he wasn’t wearing a condom, the filming continued. She described another shoot in which one of the actors she was working with was cut. Rather than stop shooting, the director went on to film an explicit scene.

In the press conference, Cameron’s partner, also a porn performer and one of the four who tested positive, blasted the industry for continuing to shoot scenes without condoms just one week after a performer tested positive. Hitting the nail on the head, he told the reporters that “Ultimately, it’s a business, and their main concern is money and not their performers.” Indeed. Rather than closing down all production and investing in the healthcare of their performers (AHF is paying for all the healthcare needs of the four performers because none of them has health insurance), the industry is busy pouring money into a PR crisis-management campaign.
