YAY! The bill to mandate condoms in porn and more STD testing has moved forward one more step in the California Senate.

[Herald Online] — California Assembly Bill 1576, a landmark bill that clarifies and strengthens state worker safety laws requiring condoms in all adult films made statewide in California, cleared the state Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee earlier today in a 3 to 1 to 1 vote and will now move on to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III (D-Los Angeles) from California’s 64th Assembly District, authored the bill, which he introduced in mid-February.

Senate Labor Committee members Ben Hueso (D, San Diego, 40th District, Chair), Holly Mitchell (D, Los Angeles, 26th District) and Alex Padilla (D, Pacoima, 20th District) voted in support of the bill with Mark Leno (D, San Francisco, 11th District) voting against the bill, and Mark Wyland (R, Carlsbad, 38th District, Vice Chair) abstaining.

“Today, the Members of the Senate Labor & Industrial Relations Committee overwhelmingly saw beyond the adult film industry’s flaccid misinformation campaign and took decisive action to protect these actors in the workplace,” said Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III in a statement. “I want to thank the many actors that testified in support of AB 1576, especially Ms. Sofia Delgado, who courageously came forward today to announce that she was the third of five adult film actors to have contracted HIV in 2013. She, along with former actors Cameron Bay, Rod Daily and others have shown an incredible amount of character to be able to share their very personal challenges in hopes of saving the lives of others.”

Check out the rest of the story below… Unsurprisingly, the porn industry is outraged that anyone dare to try and get them respect basic health and safety standards.

On Wednesday a landmark vote in the California senate could specifically require condoms for all porn shot in California.

The porn industry is already legally required per CAL OSHA general health and safety standards to provide protection from blood borne pathogens and potential sexually transmitted diseases, but this bill, AB 1576, would specifically address the porn industry.

Despite a recent UCLA study showing how much higher the STD rates are in the porn industry than the general population (see: http://www.aidshealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Adult-film-poster-STD-Prevention-2014.pdf), the porn industry is fighting this bill in a really big way, including with expensive lobbyists they’ve hired. They don’t want anything cutting into their profits gained by exploiting their workers. (Many of whom are young and uninformed, and often survivors of sexual abuse.)

READ THE FULL ARTICLE ABOUT THE UPCOMING VOTE:

http://www.edgeonthenet.com/news/aids/News/161031/%E2%80%99condoms_in_porn%E2%80%99_vote_looms_in_ca_state_senate

To elaborate, technically barrier protection from blood-borne pathogens and STDs is already required countrywide in all workplaces by OSHA standards. However, because the porn industry likes to avoid any such regulation, they have not been complying with these standards.

So Measure B, to specifically require condom use in porn, was passed in Los Angeles *city* first of all, then Los Angeles *county.* So it is now specifically required that condoms be used in porn films in those areas. This has resulted in more filming taking place outside of those areas, such as Ventura County and San Francisco, etc. But many, if not most, just continue to shoot in Los Angeles County, but don’t get the film permits they are supposed to, and still don’t use condoms.

Regarding the entire state of California, CAL OSHA standards still currently apply, but aren’t yet being fully carried out or enforced, which is the motivation behind getting the bill similar to Measure B, called AB 1576, passed for all of California. This is the bill that is going up for a vote this Wednesday in the California Senate.

The porn industry has continually threatened to move out of state if condoms are specifically required state-wide, and if this law is regularly enforced. However, many see this as an empty threat, because technically pornography is only legal to film and California and New Hampshire, and the likelihood of them setting up in New Hampshire is very slim.

Currently some filming does illegally take place in Nevada and Florida, and some other states, but the Aids Healthcare Foundation has made it clear that should the industry decide to actually start filming in great quantity in Nevada, Florida or elsewhere, that they will get similar legislation as Measure B and AB 1576 passed in those other states.

Since this is a bit of a complicated issue, here are two other articles which give a few more details which might be helpful:

We will update you Wednesday or Thursday as to what happened. Hopefully we’ll have good news that the porn industry will be held to the same standards as every other industry, and will have to protect their workers!

YAY! The bill to expressly require condoms in porn in ALL OF CALIFORNIA passed the CA appropriations committee! ~~ 🙂

This means the members of the committee value the health and safety of the performers as HUMAN BEINGS, over the PROFITS of the porn industry. (The porn industry’s main objection to AB 1576 is how it will affect their profits.)

It took THREE tries over the past few years, but thanks to the hard work and persistence of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and Isadore Hall Isadore Hall, the goal of passing this step was finally accomplished. Now only two more steps to go before the bill is law: 1) the assembly floor, and 2) the Senate. Read the details below…

Here’s another excellent article on @Belle_Knox that notes how porn is overall still oppressive to ALL WOMEN.

[The Week – Excerpt] – It’s notable, for instance, that the major media venues who are now airing Knox’s feminist editorial are only doing so because she’s a curious sexual tabloid spread. That women’s bodies are easily marketed is no strike against the patriarchy, and that a woman can get attention for her political views only after appealing to male sexual desire certainly doesn’t seem to indicate any serious move in the direction of equality.

But let’s leave aside whether this theoretically breaks the barriers of sexuality and focus on a side of porn that has gotten far less attention in this debate. What material good do women gain from the porn industry?

At the performer-level, porn is a notoriously treacherous place to make a career. While female performers might make more than their male counterparts, most of them just don’t get paid that well, thanks in part to the rise of piracy, cam sites, and the glut of material online. And dwindling profits mean not only pay cuts for performers, but an increased willingness to jockey to meet the demands of a mostly male audience. This competition has two major negative outcomes for Knox’s anti-patriarchal project.

First, it means that male consumers dictate the terms of what’s depicted. As a result, male desire impacts the work and health of performers. For example, a 2012 study found that porn performers in LA had higher rates of STIs than prostitutes working in Nevada; the study authors chalked the prevalence of infections up to the reluctance of studios to enforce condom use because visible condoms aren’t arousing. In other words, the industry drive to respond to male sexual desire could well be the reason performers like Knox are in danger of contracting life-threatening illnesses like HIV. Is this what bucking the patriarchy looks like?

Good news! Another revenge porn site operator and extortionist has been arrested for his crimes! Yay! 🙂

http://www.newson6.com/story/24743878/sand-springs-man-jailed-for-running-revenge-porn-website

[News On 6] — A Green Country man is behind bars after prosecutors say he was running a, revenge porn website. Casey Meyering is being held at the jail waiting to answer to extortion charges in California.

Meyering reportedly posted more than 400 sexually explicit photos and extorted $250 from victims to remove the photos from his website.

Legal Blogger Adam Steinbaugh said, “If they’re going out to Oklahoma to pick them up and drag them back to Northern California they’re serious.”

Agents from California paid a visit to Green Country; a special cybercrimes task force was looking for Meyering in Tulsa. After kicking in the door, agents found Meyering in a midtown hotel room.

California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris said Meyering, 28, owned a website called “WinByState.com,” that asked the public to post nude and explicit photos of people without their permission.

Meyering reportedly encouraged people to post the photos and identify their “win” according to city and state, sometimes using the victim’s name. The site is described as a “user supported website where you can trade your ex-girlfriend, your current girlfriend, or any other girl that you might know,” according to a news release from the California Department of Justice.

JUSTICE! 🙂 Torture porn company Kink(dot)com can’t get away with abusing performers with unsafe sex anymore!

[SF Weekly] – On Thursday, the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a whopping $78,710 fine to local porn company Kink.com for workplace safety hazards. The majority of the fines were for allowing performers to work without using condoms, while a $3,710 portion of the total fine was for additional violations, including improperly placed power cords, an absence of first aid supplies, and missing health safety training materials.

The fine is one of several that OSHA has issued to local porn companies recently, and follows in the wake of several HIV scares in the industry.

And there are more fines to come! Read full details in the link below, and at the other links below that. 🙂

SAD NEWS: Amnesty Int’l (@Amnesty) supports decriminalization/legalization of prostitution. Tell them NO! ~~~~~~ (Petition and other links further down.)

[Daily Mail] — Laws that ban people from buying or selling sex should be scrapped because they breach their human rights, according to Amnesty International.

A policy document drawn up by the charity claims that prostitutes, pimps and men who buy sex are simply ‘exercising their autonomy’ and should be allowed to do so ‘free from government interference’.

The proposal, which also bizarrely compares prostitutes to coal miners and domestic servants, was uncovered by writer Julie Bindel.

It has now sparked a major row within the organisation, which is best known for its attempts to free political prisoners and campaigns against torture.

Last night critics said Amnesty was ‘losing the plot’ with one former member accusing the organisation of ‘betraying women’s rights’. They told the Mail: ‘We do not solve the problems for women in the developing world by encouraging them to be prostitutes. Who benefits from that? The men. Prostitution is a form of exploitation and abuse – not a choice.’

Check out the details below!

[L.A. Weekly] Condoms are mandatory for porn production in California, an administrative law judge has ruled.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has been fighting for laws that explicitly require prophylactic use in adult film, last night called the ruling by a California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) judge a “landmark decision” that affirms “barrier protection” applies specifically to the porn business.

AHF spokesman Ged Kenslea told us that one of the most important aspects of the ruling is its affirmation that performers are indeed employees due protection under under workplace safety rules. The group has long argued that federal law prohibiting exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as sperm at the workplace applies to California’s adult performers.

The industry has said that porn stars are very part-time workers who paid per “scene” as independent contractors.

The ruling by Judge Mary Droyovage wrote that, without condoms, there is “substantial probability that employees would suffer serious exposure resulting in serious physical harm or death if violation occurred.”

STARSHINE’S STORY: Please read and share this powerful new harm story by a smart young man who decided to quit using porn! He figured out how harmful porn was to both himself and women, and then did the right thing. Starshine is setting a great example to everyone by speaking out, so please show him some love and support by liking this post and commenting. Thanks! 🙂 (Full story below, as well as at link below that.)

NOTE: He also encourages others to stand up and speak out, so we hope all of you reading this will do so!

WATCHING PORN IS A SELFISH PURSUIT THAT SUPPORTS HARM TOWARDS WOMEN EVERYWHERE

By Starshine
(Male, 20, bus driver, Ohio)

Hi everyone, I’m a 20 year old male who wants to talk about how pornography has affected his life. I also want to say that this is all about online porn; I was born in 1993, so by the time I was online, the Internet had already been fairly developed, especially in this domain. I am writing this to talk about how pornography affects me, what helped ignite a desire to leave it, and hopefully to inspire others to do the same!

When I was maybe 7-10 years old, I had first accidentally seen porn when I was probably on a crack/warez site. At first I felt shocked and scared at the images I’d seen. I was wondering if what I saw was an actual bare breast. I didn’t think people actually took their clothes off like that and I was wondering if it was maybe still covered up. I would always get scared and hit the back button or close the browser. I wasn’t old enough to feel any kind of sexual pull towards people yet, so I was only shocked and bewildered. I was afraid of being caught by my parents and getting in trouble, or getting a computer virus, or seeing something even worse that would haunt my mind for days.

A few years later, after this had happened a handful of other times, I saw it again. But this time it was different. I realized that I actually enjoyed it and wanted to see more. Before long I was deliberately looking at softcore porn, but wasn’t sure what to think about doing it. Even back then I felt tiny twinges of guilt and shame, but my curiosity and pleasure led me onwards to pursue more and more of it. Something just didn’t feel quite right, but I still liked it. I liked seeing the naked female body, something that I didn’t get to see in person.

But it wasn’t until a year or two later that I really felt a desire to see more hardcore pornography, which my curiosity and developing sexual drive eventually led me to. Before then I would always feel that same initial shock until I grew a little older, shying away. When I started watching other material, I also became aware of other stuff where people get “punished” or do “gangbangs” or receive “double penetration”. It seemed like a bit much, and I started to think about what I was really getting into, and maybe that this wasn’t the right thing to look at and participate in.

Although I never really got into the “rougher” stuff, I was still feeling really intense pleasure from watching porn. The women were very beautiful, and they seemed willing to do pretty much any sexual act I would care to see. I wasn’t used to female attention, and it was always something I craved. In pornography, women are always willing to please, always look strikingly beautiful, and always act sexual and enticing. It was like a substitute for the real thing that I always wanted but never had. An escape. But in porn, women always pleased, and with a smile.

However, I soon realized that something was wrong. Sometimes I would watch in horror as the poor young women were being treated so harshly. I would want to reach out and help them and rescue them from what was happening. This isn’t what sex should be all about. I would learn that a lot of pornography turned sex into something it wasn’t; instead of being about love and affection, it became about power, and servitude. It was prostitution, plus a camera. I’d also read a lot of stories from people who were involved in the industry, and they weren’t pretty. By watching porn, I was supporting this harm towards a lot of women everywhere.

In school, I’d heard the other boys talking about porn and sex in a rather patriarchal way. I think that the male-dominated sex that is so prevalent in porn shaped their perceptions of sex. In other words, it was like their sex education that taught them what sex was all about, and how it should be done. One time, they even made jokes during an assembly about yearbook photography! It was really getting out of hand and becoming mainstream in their minds. They watched it during class. They made more references to it. I didn’t like it at all, but I felt pressured to conform to it in order to fit in.

I’ve also found that porn often clouds my mind when I don’t want it to, especially in sexual encounters. I’ve thought about it during real-life sexual encounters with people before in order to feel aroused, which I find disturbing. This got better as I made more progress in eliminating porn from my life, however. I’ve also found that porn has perhaps turned me into sort of a sexual narcissist. I had begun to view people as objects for my sexual pleasure, instead of fellow beings who also have needs and desires. Porn is a very selfish pursuit. It’s all about you, and what you want to see. Often at the expense of others, you can get anything you wish. It’s all out there for you to see.

Despite this awareness, I found it very difficult to stop looking. It was just too enticing, their beauty, smiles, and gazes. I eventually decided I’d go to the library if I wanted to use the computer and go online. Being around other people in that type of environment eliminated that desire altogether, and perhaps it’ll help others who read my story, too! (Even so, I’ve seen other people look at it at the library!)

Today I still feel the urge to look but I’m staying strong and avoiding it it, replacing it with better, healthier things. I yearn for the day that my body mind are totally porn-free. It’s going to take some work and effort, but I believe it can happen. I want to be free again.

Thank you for reading my story, and I wish you the best if you or someone you care about is dealing with pornography, addiction to it, or sex trafficking. There is a lot of evil in the world, but if we take a stand, we can put an end to it and make a lot of lives much better. Let’s work to end these evils, and improve lives and the world as a whole!

Best wishes to you all.
