STUDY: Pornography makes men enjoy sex less, & to try to act out what they see in porn in real life

We’re hoping the results of this new study exposing pornography harms will encourage many men to stop using it! ~ (As well as encourage women to firmly say NO to porn in their relationships!)

The study suggests most commercial porn follows a “homogenous script involving violence and female degradation.” Researchers say that, as porn has become a “primary source of sexual education,” those codes of behavior become more embedded and the more likely viewers are to use those scripts to act upon real life experiences.

They found men who watch pornography several days a week rely on it for arousal and tend to involve it in their sex life by requesting particular pornographic acts. They also found the men who watch porn enjoyed sex less than those who didn’t watch porn.

The NSA Shared Sexually Explicit Photographs of Citizens Found on Their Computers, Says Edward Snowden

It seems some young men working for the NSA pass around homemade porn they find to each other and think it’s fun… Apparently they think being able to do this is one of the “fringe benefits of surveillance positions.”

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden explains:

“In the course of their daily work they stumble across something that is completely unrelated to their work, for example an intimate nude photo of someone in a sexually compromising situation but they’re extremely attractive,” said Snowden.

“So what do they do? They turn around in their chair and they show a co-worker. And their co-worker says: ‘Oh, hey, that’s great. Send that to Bill down the way,’” he said.

Ouch! So much for respecting people’s privacy. Pretty outrageous, don’t you think?

That said, this demonstrates yet another way the recording of sexually explicit photographs and videos can potentially be problematic and have unintended negative consequences. Something for people to think about before they decide to do something which often can’t be taken back…

In any case, hopefully this particular NSA abuse being exposed will help to end it!

GREAT NEWS! – Buying sex is now illegal in Canada for the 1st time! Women selling sex is decriminalized

Yay! Prostitution is now illegal in Canada! Plus there’s a new focus on DEMAND — through prosecuting pimps and johns — and on helping women exit the sex trade and transition to better lives. See basic details below, and the full press release covering all points at the link.

“The Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act is a “made-in-Canada” model, which directly targets the demand for this dangerous activity. The Act would introduce tough action to crack down on pimps and johns. For the first time, the purchase of sexual services would be criminalized, with tough penalties for those who exploit others through prostitution. The proposed legislation would also protect and safeguard our communities-in particular women, children, and those who are at risk of being drawn into prostitution-from the dangers associated with prostitution, including violence, drug-related crime, and organized crime.

“This model involves a significant overhaul of the Criminal Code’s treatment of prostitution and related activities. It would:

— Criminalize those who fuel the demand for prostitution, i.e. purchasers of sexual services;

— Continue to criminalize those who financially benefit from the exploitation of others through prostitution, such as pimps, and those who procure others for the purpose of prostitution;

— Prohibit advertising for the sale of others’ sexual services in print or online;

— Immunize those who sell their own sexual services from criminal liability for any part they play in the purchasing, material benefit, procuring or advertising offences;
Protect our communities by criminalizing communicating for the purpose of selling sexual services in public places where a child could reasonably be expected to be present;

and

— Increase existing penalties relating to child prostitution.
“These measures will be supported by $20 million in new funding, including to support grassroots organizations dealing with the most vulnerable. Assistance will be provided to those who want to leave this dangerous and harmful activity; therefore, there will be an emphasis on funding programs that can help individuals exit prostitution.”

ON PORN & CHOICE: I CHOOSE RESISTENCE: How Our Choices Can Change Our Sentiments – by Kourtney Mitchell

Check out this very powerful and informative article on the harms of pornography and the issue of CHOICE, by an awesome pro-feminist young man, Kourtney Mitchell.

There are now multiple generations of men socialized on gross-level violence against women, brought to their computers, phones and game consoles via the internet. Porn stars visit colleges and universities for “sex week”; sports events increase revenues for sex traffickers; sexual sadism is deemed chic, and men claim oppression when anyone challenges their right to watch films in which men use their penises to choke and mutilate women.

If we were to claim that it is okay for a man to sexually accost a boy simply because that is what gets him off, we would be labeled as the sexually perverted predators we are. But when we claim that it is also not okay to treat half the human population in the same manner, we are dismissed outright.

We grow up conditioned to make certain choices – the choice to objectify, denigrate and treat women as sub-human. Even when our parents try their best to protect us from such content, the culture makes sure we continue to have access to it. Our whole way of being and living and behaving in this world is directly informed by dominance of women.

But when we know better, we should do better. The harms of pornography affect all of us. It is time we start making better choices. Our choices are the first steps toward reclaiming our humanity, and shedding the skin of collective perpetration in this world.

I do not want to live in a world where women are tortured on camera for profit. Do you? When you look into it, most of you will probably find that you don’t. Imagine this: what if that was your mother, sister, or daughter getting choked and crying and being called names? Most men would not get off on that.

I am one out of a growing number of men who are attempting to change the way we think of ourselves. Start by looking past the pleasure you receive from seeing another human being tortured on camera for profit. Consider the images outside of your sexual gratification, and instead consider them on the basis of how human beings should be treated.

This Guy Hunts Down The Men Behind Revenge Porn Websites: Adam Steinbaugh (@AdamSteinbaugh)

Here is an Interesting article about one good man named Adam Steinbaugh (@AdamSteinbaugh) who’s doing everything he can to hold revenge porn profiteers accountable. Hopefully he will inspire others to step up and just SAY NO to ALL types of porn!

“I was really pissed off at what was being done to these men and women and wanted to do something about it,” says Steinbaugh, 31. Once exposed, the men are subject to public shaming. Sometimes people will take sites down when they get wind Steinbaugh is going to expose them. Others lash out at him. “I get death threats and threatened with lawsuits,” he says. He hasn’t been sued yet but those he has exposed have.”

They accept that sex is something women have and men get (do I hear “rape culture,” anyone?), that men are entitled to sex without attracting a partner, even to the limited extent of a pickup in a bar, much less pleasing or satisfying her. As Grant says, they are buying a fantasy—the fantasy of the woman who wants whatever they want (how johns persuade themselves of this is beyond me). But maybe men would be better partners, in bed and out of it, if they couldn’t purchase that fantasy, if sex for them, as for women, meant finding someone who likes them enough to exchange pleasure for pleasure, intimacy for intimacy. The current way of seeing sex work is all about liberty—but what about equality?

“As well as profiling buyers the Immigrant Council of Ireland examined if the men ever came across women they believed were being controlled by pimps, were frightened or were trafficked. The results are startling, with over one in four admitting they had come across women and girls they believed were in such situations. A significantly lesser number considered to report this to the authorities, dispelling the myth that buyers are helpful in tackling human trafficking.”

Whether it be Katy Perry writhing around almost naked in a music video, or Miley Cyrus “twerking” with a man almost twice her age (who seems to have a “blurred” understanding of sex), the images that bombard us daily look much like soft-core porn did a few decades ago.

Today there is almost no soft-core porn on the internet, because most of it has migrated into pop culture. What we are left with is a porn industry that is now so hard-core that even some of the big-name porn producers and directors are amazed at how far they can go.

Feminists from six countries convened in London this weekend for a Stop Porn Culture conference that focused on how porn culture shapes our ideas about sexuality, relationships, masculinity, femininity and intimacy. Recognizing that porn images have now been seamlessly woven into our pop culture, thanks mainly to the internet, speakers addressed the multiple harms of bringing up a generation of girls and boys on misogynist images.

One of the key issues discussed at the conference was the way porn fans are becoming increasingly desensitised and are looking for more hard-core content. According to porn director Mitchell Spinelli, fans are becoming “more demanding about wanting to see the more extreme stuff.”
