But when feminists argue that sex work should be normalized, they accept male privilege they would attack in any other area. They accept that sex is something women have and men get (do I hear “rape culture,” anyone?), that men are entitled to sex without attracting a partner, even to the limited extent of a pickup in a bar, much less pleasing or satisfying her. As Grant says, they are buying a fantasy—the fantasy of the woman who wants whatever they want (how johns persuade themselves of this is beyond me). But maybe men would be better partners, in bed and out of it, if they couldn’t purchase that fantasy, if sex for them, as for women, meant finding someone who likes them enough to exchange pleasure for pleasure, intimacy for intimacy. The current way of seeing sex work is all about liberty—but what about equality?

Nordic Model of Prostitution Approved by European Parliament (Punishes the John, not prostituted woman)

In case you missed it, the Nordic Model for prostitution was approved last week by the European Parliament! Yay team!! 🙂

[IB Times] — A vote at the European Parliament that supports the ‘Nordic Model’ of prostitution has been voted through with a large majority.

Put forward by Labour London MEP Mary Honeyball, the model of prostitution law criminalises the client instead of the sex worker.

At the vote, 343 members voted in favour of the report, 139 against and 105 people abstained. Commenting on the outcome, Honeyball said: “Today’s outcome represents a vital signal from MEPs that we cannot continue to tolerate the exploitation of women. Rather than blanket legalization, parliament has backed the more nuanced approach already practised in Sweden as a means of tackling prostitution. This punishes men who treat women’s bodies as a commodity, without criminalising women who are driven into sex work.

“The idea that prostitution is the ‘oldest profession’ leads some to think we should accept it as a fact of life – that all we can do is regulate it a little better. This course of action leads to an increase in prostitution levels, normalising the purchase of sex and ingraining the inequalities which sustain the sex industry.

“The outcome of today’s vote symbolises the changing attitudes of EU countries on this issue, and the desire of member states to learn from one another. I hope today’s result will encourage member states including the UK to be radical and ambitious enough to go Swedish.”

‘Revenge Porn’ Website Lands Man In Jail. He extorted victims with sexual photos posted by ex partners

Good news! Another revenge porn site operator and extortionist has been arrested for his crimes! Yay! 🙂

[News On 6] — A Green Country man is behind bars after prosecutors say he was running a, revenge porn website. Casey Meyering is being held at the jail waiting to answer to extortion charges in California.

Meyering reportedly posted more than 400 sexually explicit photos and extorted $250 from victims to remove the photos from his website.

Legal Blogger Adam Steinbaugh said, “If they’re going out to Oklahoma to pick them up and drag them back to Northern California they’re serious.”

Agents from California paid a visit to Green Country; a special cybercrimes task force was looking for Meyering in Tulsa. After kicking in the door, agents found Meyering in a midtown hotel room.

California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris said Meyering, 28, owned a website called “WinByState.com,” that asked the public to post nude and explicit photos of people without their permission.

Meyering reportedly encouraged people to post the photos and identify their “win” according to city and state, sometimes using the victim’s name. The site is described as a “user supported website where you can trade your ex-girlfriend, your current girlfriend, or any other girl that you might know,” according to a news release from the California Department of Justice.

Sugar Daddy Website has Coeds Justifying Prostitution — (via NY Post)

Here’s a disturbing expose on how prostitution is increasing with college women via “Sugar Daddy” arrangements. It’s so sad to see how selling sex (or “relationships”) for money is being normalized and justified!

[NY York Post. Excerpt] — Peppered around the site are advertisements about how this is the gateway to female independence.

“SeekingArrangement.com was created to empower women,” Wade said in a 2012 statement for National Women’s Month. “A sugar baby is an empowered woman who is tired of dating losers that contribute nothing to her life. She has made a commitment to only date men who will help her to achieve her goals.”

Young women often rationalize their participation as one of brass tacks. Men often buy them dinner and gifts. Why not add cash ­ or the rent ­ into the equation? That the money usually changes hands through PayPal, and not an envelope on the dresser, helps reinforce the illusion that this isn’t tit for tat.

Like other sugar babies, Megan doesn’t consider this special brand of financial aid prostitution; she compares SeekingArrangement to any other dating site, just with a different clientele.

“I think that sugar-dating sites are more likely to attract the type of person who is interested in a traditional power dynamic between men and women, [who] is older, has more resources, has more money to . . . I don’t know . . .”

Betraying her own rationalizations, though, she admits that she takes more security precautions when she’s out with a potential daddy than if it were a “regular” date.

Bay Area Porn Companies Slapped With Fines for Not Using Condoms. Kink.com fined $78k, + more fines

JUSTICE! 🙂 Torture porn company Kink(dot)com can’t get away with abusing performers with unsafe sex anymore!

[SF Weekly] – On Thursday, the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a whopping $78,710 fine to local porn company Kink.com for workplace safety hazards. The majority of the fines were for allowing performers to work without using condoms, while a $3,710 portion of the total fine was for additional violations, including improperly placed power cords, an absence of first aid supplies, and missing health safety training materials.

The fine is one of several that OSHA has issued to local porn companies recently, and follows in the wake of several HIV scares in the industry.
