It’s good to see that porn actor “Mr. Marcus,” who knowingly exposed others to syphilis, has to pay one of his victims a significant amount of damages! It’s some measure of justice, anyway. Hopefully others will note these harsh consequences, and NEVER consider misleading their employers or fellow workers about their STD status and test results!

[Post Periodical] – Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Minning heard testimony Friday from Heather DeAngelo, known in the industry as Lylith LaVey, before ordering Jesse Spencer to pay her $129,360. Spencer did not participate in the court proceedings and was found to be in default.

DeAngelo sued Spencer, also known as Mr. Marcus, in September 2012 after finding out he had the communicable disease, according to her complaint alleging fraud, negligence, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress. The scenes involving DeAngelo and Spencer were filmed in July 2012 in Encino, according to court records.

DeAngelo did not allege she contracted the disease.

———-

In addition to this latest penalty…

“Last year, Spencer was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years probation for “knowingly exposing at least two co-stars to syphilis after testing positive for the disease days earlier.”

Check out this disturbing ABC News 20/20 video report on the increasing number of students now stripping to pay for college.

http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/college-students-strip-pay-tuition-costs/story?id=23782754

It’s disturbing because:

1) It misrepresents, normalizes, promotes and glamorizes stripping (and porn)

2) It doesn’t show the downsides and harsh realities of stripping

3) It doesn’t show that women usually have to grind on men’s laps and erect penises as part of their “job”, and not just dance on stage

4) It demonstrates the “Belle Knox effect” taking place — of other young women hearing about her and then following in her footsteps because of how “Belle” has glamorized the sex industry.

All very tragic and upsetting, don’t you think? Please feel free to leave your comments expressing your thoughts about this unbalanced and misrepresentative report in the comments section at the ABC News article above. Thanks!

ADDITIONAL VIDEO: Below is the Nightline version of the above 20/20 news report, which includes some different and additional information. Slightly more balanced, but still equally disturbing!

http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/stripping-pay-college-23789103

IMPORTANT NOTE: Women paying their way through college by stripping may be increasing, but they are still the exception and not the rule. Many women in the sex industry have very low self-esteem, and are seeking approval as much as money. This is often because they are survivors of childhood sexual abuse. These young women often have to assert how great and “empowering” stripping is, to themselves and others, in order to:

1) keep themselves in denial about the truth of what they’re doing and why, so they can continue and survive it and not feel too bad about it

2) so they can make their needed money from the male customers, who desperately want to believe that women really like sexually exploiting themselves for male consumption, and that women are really fine, and not there because of their past abuse or other issues. If they told the truth men wouldn’t want to pay them.

For those interested in learning more about the actual HARSH REALITY about what it’s REALLY like to work in a strip club, feel free to check out our page on stripping at our website below. Thanks!

YAY! The bill to mandate condoms in porn and more STD testing has moved forward one more step in the California Senate.

[Herald Online] — California Assembly Bill 1576, a landmark bill that clarifies and strengthens state worker safety laws requiring condoms in all adult films made statewide in California, cleared the state Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee earlier today in a 3 to 1 to 1 vote and will now move on to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III (D-Los Angeles) from California’s 64th Assembly District, authored the bill, which he introduced in mid-February.

Senate Labor Committee members Ben Hueso (D, San Diego, 40th District, Chair), Holly Mitchell (D, Los Angeles, 26th District) and Alex Padilla (D, Pacoima, 20th District) voted in support of the bill with Mark Leno (D, San Francisco, 11th District) voting against the bill, and Mark Wyland (R, Carlsbad, 38th District, Vice Chair) abstaining.

“Today, the Members of the Senate Labor & Industrial Relations Committee overwhelmingly saw beyond the adult film industry’s flaccid misinformation campaign and took decisive action to protect these actors in the workplace,” said Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III in a statement. “I want to thank the many actors that testified in support of AB 1576, especially Ms. Sofia Delgado, who courageously came forward today to announce that she was the third of five adult film actors to have contracted HIV in 2013. She, along with former actors Cameron Bay, Rod Daily and others have shown an incredible amount of character to be able to share their very personal challenges in hopes of saving the lives of others.”

Check out the rest of the story below… Unsurprisingly, the porn industry is outraged that anyone dare to try and get them respect basic health and safety standards.

On Wednesday a landmark vote in the California senate could specifically require condoms for all porn shot in California.

The porn industry is already legally required per CAL OSHA general health and safety standards to provide protection from blood borne pathogens and potential sexually transmitted diseases, but this bill, AB 1576, would specifically address the porn industry.

Despite a recent UCLA study showing how much higher the STD rates are in the porn industry than the general population (see: http://www.aidshealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Adult-film-poster-STD-Prevention-2014.pdf), the porn industry is fighting this bill in a really big way, including with expensive lobbyists they’ve hired. They don’t want anything cutting into their profits gained by exploiting their workers. (Many of whom are young and uninformed, and often survivors of sexual abuse.)

READ THE FULL ARTICLE ABOUT THE UPCOMING VOTE:

http://www.edgeonthenet.com/news/aids/News/161031/%E2%80%99condoms_in_porn%E2%80%99_vote_looms_in_ca_state_senate

To elaborate, technically barrier protection from blood-borne pathogens and STDs is already required countrywide in all workplaces by OSHA standards. However, because the porn industry likes to avoid any such regulation, they have not been complying with these standards.

So Measure B, to specifically require condom use in porn, was passed in Los Angeles *city* first of all, then Los Angeles *county.* So it is now specifically required that condoms be used in porn films in those areas. This has resulted in more filming taking place outside of those areas, such as Ventura County and San Francisco, etc. But many, if not most, just continue to shoot in Los Angeles County, but don’t get the film permits they are supposed to, and still don’t use condoms.

Regarding the entire state of California, CAL OSHA standards still currently apply, but aren’t yet being fully carried out or enforced, which is the motivation behind getting the bill similar to Measure B, called AB 1576, passed for all of California. This is the bill that is going up for a vote this Wednesday in the California Senate.

The porn industry has continually threatened to move out of state if condoms are specifically required state-wide, and if this law is regularly enforced. However, many see this as an empty threat, because technically pornography is only legal to film and California and New Hampshire, and the likelihood of them setting up in New Hampshire is very slim.

Currently some filming does illegally take place in Nevada and Florida, and some other states, but the Aids Healthcare Foundation has made it clear that should the industry decide to actually start filming in great quantity in Nevada, Florida or elsewhere, that they will get similar legislation as Measure B and AB 1576 passed in those other states.

Since this is a bit of a complicated issue, here are two other articles which give a few more details which might be helpful:

http://www.aidshealth.org/archives/18153

We will update you Wednesday or Thursday as to what happened. Hopefully we’ll have good news that the porn industry will be held to the same standards as every other industry, and will have to protect their workers!

GOOD NEWS from Japan! Possession of child pornography is FINALLY illegal! It’s about time, don’t you think? We do!

[Reuters] – TOKYO, June 18 (Reuters) – Japan’s parliament voted on Wednesday to outlaw possession of child pornography after years of international calls for a crackdown, but avoided a clampdown on sexually explicit manga comics and animation depicting young children.

Japan is the last OECD nation to criminalize possession of child pornography, although it outlawed production and distribution in 1999, and has long been considered a safe haven for those buying child pornography.

“For too long, there was a poor understanding of children’s rights. Ultimately, that’s why it’s taken so long,” Kiyohiko Toyama, a member of the New Komeito party and a proponent of the bill, told Reuters.

“By outlawing the possession of child pornography with the intent to satisfy sexual interest, we make it harder for people to trade in such material.”

The new law, however, excluded an original clause calling for a study onto the effects of such pornographic manga involving young children, after publishers and opposition lawmakers said it could lead to curbing free speech.

———-

But look how bad it had to get before they made that happen:

National data show a rise in child pornography crimes, with police uncovering 1,644 cases last year, around 10 times higher than a decade ago. Over half of the cases involved sharing or selling photos or videos over the Internet, police said.

Yikes. Better late than never, though! Hopefully this will eventually lead to pornographic child manga (child cartoon porn) also being made illegal someday. In the meantime, hopefully this new law will also save many children from being horrifically sexually abused, and having it be filmed for the sick sexual pleasure of pedophiles!

We must fight against a tendency of looking at children as sexual objects, and allowing them to be taken advantage of, sexually and commercially.

Exactly! To say the least!

Here’s a great essay about how pornography contributes to violence against women and misogynist behavior and abuse.

Sexism and violence, prevalent parts of our society, have been leading factors in creating a male-dominated porn industry; it is designed to satisfy the desires of men who do not care for women. By encouraging violent behavior and sexual abuse in productions, this industry is sending a very negative message to society. Male behavior should, according to porn, be violent, dominant, aggressive, and tough; young males end up internalizing those standards for male behavior instead of developing on their own. The pornography industry promotes domestic abuse against women and creates twisted delusions of masculinity.

http://www.antipornography.org/pornography-normalization-violence-and-abuse.html

Sadly so true!

This essay was written by Emma-Li Thompson (@ehmmali), a supporter of AntiPornography.org who is a student at Arizona State University. It was Emma-Li who arranged for our volunteer Jessica Mendes to speak to her Women’s Studies class about Jessica’s harmful experiences doing porn. We recorded that very moving and informative speech in this video here:

———-

http://youtu.be/ymWVWHOgDFM

———-

We’re very glad Emma-Li reached out to us, and we’re thankful that she has been stepping up to do her part to take a firm stand against the harms of pornography and to educate others. Emma-Li will be doing some free-lance volunteering for our organization later this year, and we’re very happy about this. She is setting an excellent example to everyone of contributing to this cause in a much needed way, and we sincerely hope that others will follow her example. (It is necessary for more people to do their part to fight porn, or it will overtake our society even more than it already has!)

Thanks again for everything, awesomely anti-porn Emma-Li! 🙂

Many thanks to Pornography Harms and all others who helped, for their AMAZING efforts in making this happen!!

FROM PORN HARMS:

BIG VICTORY!

After our meeting with them last month, Google has alerted their advertisers that they will be implementing their new advertising policy which eliminates pornographic ads.

In an email, they informed their AdWords users that

“[b]eginning in the coming weeks, we’ll no longer accept ads that promote graphic depictions of sexual acts including, but not limited to, hardcore pornography; graphic sexual acts … [and] sexual activity.

“When we make this change, Google will disapprove all ads and sites that are identified as being in violation of our revised policy.”

Yay! Prostitution is now illegal in Canada! Plus there’s a new focus on DEMAND — through prosecuting pimps and johns — and on helping women exit the sex trade and transition to better lives. See basic details below, and the full press release covering all points at the link.

“The Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act is a “made-in-Canada” model, which directly targets the demand for this dangerous activity. The Act would introduce tough action to crack down on pimps and johns. For the first time, the purchase of sexual services would be criminalized, with tough penalties for those who exploit others through prostitution. The proposed legislation would also protect and safeguard our communities-in particular women, children, and those who are at risk of being drawn into prostitution-from the dangers associated with prostitution, including violence, drug-related crime, and organized crime.

“This model involves a significant overhaul of the Criminal Code’s treatment of prostitution and related activities. It would:

— Criminalize those who fuel the demand for prostitution, i.e. purchasers of sexual services;

— Continue to criminalize those who financially benefit from the exploitation of others through prostitution, such as pimps, and those who procure others for the purpose of prostitution;

— Prohibit advertising for the sale of others’ sexual services in print or online;

— Immunize those who sell their own sexual services from criminal liability for any part they play in the purchasing, material benefit, procuring or advertising offences;
Protect our communities by criminalizing communicating for the purpose of selling sexual services in public places where a child could reasonably be expected to be present;

and

— Increase existing penalties relating to child prostitution.
“These measures will be supported by $20 million in new funding, including to support grassroots organizations dealing with the most vulnerable. Assistance will be provided to those who want to leave this dangerous and harmful activity; therefore, there will be an emphasis on funding programs that can help individuals exit prostitution.”

http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/statement-minister-justice-regarding-legislation-response-supreme-court-canada-ruling-1917491.htm

———-

NOTE: We acknowledge that this is not the same or as ideal as the full Nordic Model that abolitionists were hoping and working for, but it is still a HUGE improvement from previous laws, and an even greater leap from what pro-sex industry people were going for. So we consider this to be a significant success and an enormous step in the right direction. Go Canada! 🙂

Gail Dines of Stop Porn Culture and Donny Pauling, ex-porn producer, explain the harsh reality of the life of “porn stars”, and how they are manipulated and abused in the industry. Very disturbing, but very informative!

Former playboy film producer, Donny Pauling, recently described his experience recruiting young women into the porn industry. At age 18, the targeted girls are typically in college, making $200 a week at a local coffee shop. Pauling would approach each one, tell her how beautiful she is, and would then invite her in for an interview.

The moment the young woman entered his office, he would begin seducing her into film making by manipulating her. He would let her talk for 30 minutes about herself, all-the-while Pauling was looking for ways to coerce her into making a film. He would argue that the money is great and the films were not that bad.

At the beginning, Pauling said, each girl was bright-eyed, happy, and excited about the money. The first day on the set, she would be asked to do soft core pornography. The young woman would leave thinking that it wasn’t so bad and the money was really good.

Within a few days, Pauling would call the girl and tell her how much money she would make in the next film, without giving any details. With the thought of the money alone, most young women are hooked into the concept and return for a second film.

Over time, Pauling would direct the young woman to do more and more aggressive, violent, or deviant acts. He and other producers push women as far as they can go—and then push even further, even to the point of causing injuries. All the while, they would refer to the legal contract the young woman had signed (and of course, she would not have an attorney assist in making certain the contract protected her.)

Pauling said that progression into darker and darker films would cause the light to go out in a young woman’s eyes; the girls are shocked and ashamed by what they have done. Eventually, most of them resort to drugs and alcohol abuse to escape reality and depression.

After time passes, young women leave or are kicked out of the porn industry with nothing to show—except a sexually transmitted disease, emotional and sometimes physical scarring.
